Power Hour: Making Minutes Count
A comprehensive homework help and tutoring program, POWER HOUR is designed to raise the academic proficiency of Club members ages 6 to12.

The homework center is a major component of the Power Hour initiative at each of our club locations. Our club members look forward to time after school to complete assignments and to enjoy recreational reading.

Club members who have to complete essays and research papers use the computer center and also the expertise of the computer center’s coordinator.

Participant’s academic progress is monitored throughout the school year to measure the impact of the program.

Club Tech's Skill Tech Programs

Skill Tech is a basic computer skills program that develops Club members’ proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and other productivity software through fun, hands-on, engaging lessons and projects for four age groups.

Participants learn skills including navigation and Internet safety; how to use search engines on the Internet for information; how computers work and how to identify parts and understand technical terms; an introduction to productivity, reference and educational software is also part of Skill Tech.

Reading Enrichment

“Bookworms” is a summer reading enrichment initiative that encourages our youth to read using a “community book” format for each reading group (6 to 7 year olds, 8 to 9 year olds, 10 to 12 year olds, and teens). Each age group reads the same book and enjoys participating in activities relating to the themes and characters of the stories. Literary discussions allow young readers to think critically and to share their feelings and perceptions relating to the characters, setting, mood, and storylines. During each session, facilitators ask a wide variety of questions relating to the books in order to stimulate literary discussions and to measure for reading comprehension.

Research has reported significant reading level decreases in young people during the summer months. These findings have even a more profound impact on inner-city kids. We want our club members to become life-long readers and understand how important reading skills are to the world of work.

Empower Me

Empower Me is an initiative at the PAL Unit to expose young people to adult role models within the community who have exhibited outstanding work and life values on a consistent basis.

We want to introduce adult female and male role models to our youth in order for them to emulate their outstanding character and value systems.

Club members learn about the impact that hard work, a quality education, and exhibiting a strong character has on their vocational careers and personal lives.
