“Bookworms” is a
summer reading enrichment initiative that encourages our
youth to read using a “community book” format
for each reading group (6 to 7 year olds, 8 to 9 year olds,
10 to 12 year olds, and teens). Each age group reads the
same book and enjoys participating in activities relating
to the themes and characters of the stories. Literary discussions
allow young readers to think critically and to share their
feelings and perceptions relating to the characters, setting,
mood, and storylines. During each session, facilitators
ask a wide variety of questions relating to the books in
order to stimulate literary discussions and to measure for
reading comprehension.
Research has reported significant reading level decreases
in young people during the summer months. These findings
have even a more profound impact on inner-city kids. We
want our club members to become life-long readers and understand
how important reading skills are to the world of work.
